Building a future

Wednesday 11th March 2015

It’s National Apprenticeship Week, and everyone here at BBP wants to say good luck to all the young people currently embarking on apprenticeships, internships or work experience! We know it can be daunting, but we’ve seen first-hand how placements like these can encourage a young adult along a career path they’re considering, or inspire them to pursue one they may not have thought of before.

Here are testimonials by two of our recent guests, Lewis and Michael:

“During my week with BBP, I worked alongside the developers and created my own file-sharing website. The site that I created featured the ability to sign in with your own account, which opened up into a personal ‘file space’ that allowed you to manage, upload and share files. I really enjoyed creating this website using HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript, as well as using databases for the login system with SQL. Throughout the week, the BBP team was always happy to help me, even though they had plenty to do themselves. I enjoyed being a part of the team and learning how to incorporate the skills that I have already learnt into a working environment. It is one thing being taught how to do something but another being able to use that skill with a team of professionals. I feel that I have gained a lot from this experience.” – Lewis

“My work experience at BBP was incredibly enjoyable and useful, surpassing my expectations of making coffee by a country mile! During the week I learnt or revised – with the help of staff and the Internet – Javascript, HTML, jQuery, CSS, Bootstrap and the rudiments of PHP, to assist in the creation of a website far surpassing anything I have attempted before, in terms of both aesthetics and content. The BBP team was without exception friendly and welcoming. As well as coding skills, I also garnered knowledge as to what the administration of a business looks like, thanks to being allowed to sit in on meetings. Overall, it was a fantastic experience that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone else considering BBP as an option.” – Michael

For BBP, creating these opportunities is not just about having someone jump through hoops (or run to the shop), but about investing in the next generation of thinkers and doers. It also shakes things up a bit, with everyone benefitting from there being a fresh pair of eyes in the office!
