Functional Skills Issue

Monday 12th August 2013

Even though Tara has completed the majority of her Apprenticeship, in order to complete the course she had to make sure she has been awarded her Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT.

Tara received GCSE’s in all three of these subjects, so therefore doesn’t need to complete the English or Maths. However, even though her ICT GCSE course at the time she took it was acceptable for the apprenticeship, when the apprenticeship was reviewed in July last year the standards have now changed.

Disappointingly, this results in Tara having to retake her GCSE, even though she received an A* when she originally took it.

Speaking to the college about this issue, it seems they are looking into this and hoping to change these requirements for future applicants.

Tara will complete her ICT Functional Skills exam as soon as they can find a suitable time for her to sit it. She will then be on her way to completing her Apprenticeship.
